Morocco, past the postcard

There is more to Morocco than sand

Cedar forests, waterfalls, oases and farmland — a country that changes with the season. We write about it, and we take people there.

What Morocco actually is

Most people picture the Sahara. Morocco is a country roughly the size of Spain with two coastlines, three mountain ranges, cedar forest, oases, waterfalls and a great deal of farmland. The desert is the southern edge of it, not the whole thing.

You can ski in the High Atlas in the morning and stand in a palm oasis by evening. There are wild Barbary macaques an hour from Fes, and a stretch of Atlantic coast that holds almost the entire wild population of one of the world’s rarest birds.

The land

Four kinds of Morocco

Mountains

The Rif, the Middle Atlas and the High Atlas. Snow in winter, walking from April, and villages built into terraced hillsides.

Oases & desert

Palm groves fed by khettara — underground channels dug by hand centuries ago — drawing green lines through the pre-Sahara.

Forest & wildlife

Cedar forest in the Middle Atlas with wild Barbary macaques, and lagoons where flamingos winter.

Farms & harvests

Roses, argan, dates, saffron, apples, olives and citrus — the working year that runs underneath everything.

Joining the harvest, not just watching it

We are building something new: journeys that bring visitors into Morocco’s seasonal work itself. Standing in a grove, learning from the people who farm it, and eating what came out of the ground that morning.

It is not open yet. We are meeting farms and cooperatives and agreeing how visits will work, so that the people hosting are properly paid for their time. When it is ready it will appear here.
